We made it out to Hoosier Trail Rides at Fort Harrison State Park to ride the horses and ponies! I surprised my kids on August 1, just two weeks out from the start of the next school year. The look on their faces was priceless. We city folks don’t get out to play on the animals much!

We paid $5 to enter the park and my oldest two could ride the horses on the trail with a guide and without me along. Ages six and up can do that! My younger two were just as happy to ride on the pony! The trail rides come in 30 minute increments for 1.5 miles of 60 minutes for 2.5 miles and are priced accordingly. At the time, the trail ride was $16/child and $3.50/child for the ponies. Prices change, so verify before you go.
We followed the “stable” signs through the park to get to the barn. They have strict rules here (grin!)
The grounds are just gorgeous. An employee told me there are over 70 horses on site. We saw some in the stable and the nearby pasture and others were out on the open pasture or on the trails on tours.
Get right up close, just don’t step behind them!
We prepared to saddle up on our ponies!
My two ages 3 and 5 were overjoyed to meet their pony!
My daughter went first and she said on her first lap down the trail, “Mommy, I’m a cow girl!”
Lil Larry was our pony for the ride and he was a good fit for us. Nice job, Larry!
My son was up next and he, too, was thrilled to be on Larry!
The pony rides are parent/guardian guided tours, so make sure to wear your comfy, closed-toe shoes as you guide your pony and kiddo down the trail! You get three laps (down and back) with each rider. It was more than enough time to enjoy the pony!
My older boys returned from their 1.5-mile ride with huge smiles. They were with a guide and one other gal about their age. Their tour went through the woods and the boys reported the scenes were amazing!

The park itself is huge, complete with trails, picnic tables and a play ground. We packed our lunch and hit the play ground after our rides and the day was fantastic!
