We were invited out to media night to experience the “30th annual Headless Horseman” at Conner Prairie! Gates are open from 6 to 9PM and we arrived around 7PM. It was not overly crowded and it had been pretty warm earlier in the day, so the gal at the gates said many people like to come later in October AND when it’s really cold to get a great experience of the fall on the prairie!
(My pictures will be on the darker side since the sun was going down!)
So how is this year different than past years? They gave the Headless Horseman concept a name and this year it is called “Conner Scairie”! Therefore the entertainment for the night was based around that theme. Dr. Acula, Beutisha, Ed, Holly Ween, Harry Howler and the infamous Headless Horseman are all stops throughout the campus and are each vying for your vote to become Mayor of Conner Scairie! After you experience it all, you even get a chance to cast your vote at a booth onsite!
The event is part of your membership or tickets can be purchased onsite. We’re heading into our third year as members and I will say that this museum is truly worth the investment! So often I stop in for just an hour or two to let the kids roam and play and enjoy the gorgeous outdoors or experience Discovery Zone indoors in the winter. If you’re planning to attend the Headless Horseman this year, you can apply your entry fee toward a membership and it’s a great investment that gives back all year round (PS-they’re not paying me to say that…it’s just one parent to another sharing out! )

Dates: October 11-13, 17-20, 24-27
Gates open 6-9P, but get there early to get your ride tickets and allow enough time to enjoy the events spread about! Arriving later in the night means you get a later hayride time and rides have been known to go as late as 11PM or later depending on the crowds!
Since we attended last year, my kids remembered “Steven’s Puppets”! We realized he was back again and my kids darted for the red barn to see his show! He is a true entertainer for all ages and my crew got a great laugh at his silly sense of humor! That runs every half hour from 6-10PM.
The puppet show in action!
We also made it in for the entertaining magic show that runs at 6:15 and 8:30PM. Some events are exact times and some run the duration of the night, so make sure to get an event map to guide you through the opportunities.
For those that dare, the balloon is flying high! Those rides are NOT included in your admission, but can be purchased on site for an additional fee of $12 each for members and $15 each for guests.
Hungry?! No worries, there are plenty of treats! Cupcakes, popcorn, pizza, pretzels, hot drinks, and all the goodies from the Apple Store are available to fill your belly and complete the night!
There is SO much more to experience, but the night was getting late and we wanted to go meet the Headless Horseman on the hayride! Some of the stops we missed included Beautisha’s costume runway, Hugabug Face Painting (for an extra fee), Flying Monkeys on the slingshot, musical and craft entertainment at Holly Ween’s Hollow, Ed’s Electrical Spectacle, The Monster Museum, Skary-o-ke with Harry Howler, games, a Disney movie, and the Crane Brothers Superstition Emporium! Like I said, come early and allow enough time to enjoy ALL the fun!
For those wondering if you should wear your costume or not, it’s certainly welcome! As we get closer to Halloween, you’ll likely see more kiddos in gear. A good majority of people are not dressed up, but for those that choose to do so, you can showcase your costume on Beutisha’s Costume Runway at 8:15PM!
When you enter the gates you will be given a queue time to get in line for the hayride. This is based off of your arrival and how busy the event is at the time. Hayrides may extend past 11PM, so plan accordingly for your trip. The lighted signs above represent hayride times and you’ll line up according to the time you’re given. From one parent to another, you can be standing and waiting in line for quite a while, so make sure you’re fed, restroomed and prepared for the weather if it’s cool out! Little ones don’t understand the wait!
After our wait in line and upon our entrance back to Prairie Town to board the hayride, we were greeted by some of the townspeople who were sharing the story of the Headless Horseman. If you have any questions, make sure to ask them about the story of how he lost his head. They have all the details to share with you about this scary night!
Our hayride and tractor awaited our arrival. We piled in with about 20 other people and prepared to take the trails!
We listened while they gave us instructions about the ride, what to look out for and who might be out on the trails with us!
No cameras allowed….so take your pictures before you leave!
That’s me with a 5-year-old girl sitting in my lap with her hood over her head. She missed the entire ride and held on to me tightly! Her 4-year-old brother took more of it in in his Dad’s arms, but was as equally afraid. I also noticed my older boys sitting a little closer to Mom than usual! The ride itself is through dark trails with small vignettes lit up along the way. There are periodic moments where live people speak up or jump out, but this is very kid and family friendly for all ages!
Hats off to Conner Prairie for another great year of this wonderful fall, family tradition. We give this 12 thumbs up (there are 6 in our family!) and we say this is a “Must Go” for you and your family this season!
Thank you Conner Prairie for having us on this wonderful trip!
