We made it out to “Community Day” at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this year! I’ve lived in Indy for 39 years and have never been to this event. After promoting it on our Indy Family Resource web calendar, we decided to take the kids out of school and try it out for ourselves!
And it was a hit!
As of 2014, the tickets were $10 per person over the age of 6 and that included free parking. We parked on the infield and made our way down to the entertainment areas. Get more info on Community Day HERE!
and this is how we made our way from our parked van down to the entertainment area! We had a very strong pedaler who transported us down. We could have chosen to walk or ride the free shuttle, but we chose this option to create a fun memory for the kids. $20 later, they thought it was fantastic! IMS brought these guys in from Chicago and they were there to shuttle people back and forth {and entertain kids!} all day long!
We checked into the Kids’ area, which is included in the event admission. We had to sign a security waiver for each child and off we went to play!
We enjoyed a turn in the driver’s seat.
Took pictures in the parked race car
Explored the inflatable options
Smiled to show off our face painting and our balloon art
We raced our remote control cars on the track
Explored the obstacle course
Another part to the obstacle course
Prizes for all upon completion of the activities!
We dressed up to support the troops and got set up for a photo opp!
After we played for a time, we made our way over to the general activities going on near Victory Circle. We listened to a comedian and sat on the side eating our picnic lunch. We were able to bring in any food or drink that we wanted, but there were also endless amounts of treats, meals and concessions of all types to purchase.
Watermelon was a good choice to bring in on this trip!
We watched the midday Media Pit-Stop Competition at Victory Circle. Additionally, there were Driver autograph stations in the area that we could have waited in line for, but chose not to on this trip.
We told our kids they could choose one treat! Cotton candy, soft pretzels, lemonade, hot dogs, burgers, fries, shaved ice and pop corn were lining the streets as a few of the options for purchase.
and on the return trip to the van, we hopped on the tram. It stopped at the 500 Museum, that we could have explored as part of our entrance that day, but we chose not to. Actually, we did a Crew Review on that museum a few years back and that report can be found HERE!
When we pulled in, we were parked among a Corvette Club that traveled over from Illinois. We told them we did not get the memo to drive our Corvette and found it quite hilarious that our van was stuck in the middle of their amazing line up. We offered them a test drive in our hot rod, but no one took us up on it!
Our trip today was just perfect! Parking was easy, the traffic was minimal, the grounds were clean, restrooms were easily accessible and we commend the 500 Festival Committee for making this family-friendly event available to the city of Indianapolis. Wagons, strollers and wheel chairs can easily make it in and around the grounds. If you can make it out to this event in future years, your crew will be glad you did! If you can’t make it to “Community Day”, consider making it out for the upcoming 500 Parade and read our past Crew Review on that stop HERE!
